Random Idle
ok, on this is the problem i'm having with a 90' GT that i work on a lot. The car will idle fine for about 5 seconds (around 1000), then drop to around 400, then back fine again for a few more seconds. sometimes it will stay low and even stall. what's the deal? i've done a search and could really come up with anything. the only thing i have yet to finish is hooking up the throttle linkage correctly (another post),but that wouldn't affect it i wouldn't think. anyway, any help?

how do i check the tps setting? theres no build up in the tb and i'm 99% sure all the vaccum lines made it back to where they're supposed to be. could the improper throttle linkage setup cause the tps to go out of whack?

TPS setting is checked through the voltage going in and out of the TPS on a voltmeter. I'm not sure where it is on your car, or what the correct voltage is, but splice the wiring a little bit to get the multimeter on to both the wires comming out of the TPS and check the voltage. If its out of the range it's supposed to be at, then you need a new TPS. Vaccum leak is the most common problem, so spray some soapy water on the connections and check for bubbles or idle change. Throttle linkage could cause problems but the idle would be more consistantly off at one certain RPM if the linkage was bad, not jumping all over.

you dont need to replace a tps because it is out of adjustment. one you dont splice the wire you knick the sheating of the insulation of the wire. the green and orange are the two you want. get a mulitmeter digital and set if for dc volts. get your leads and apply them to the exposed wires. at idle on a stock car it should read 92-94. to adjust this your gonna need to loosen the screws up on top alittle bit. try moving hte tps around to you hit 99-1.0 this is optuimum for performance. if you cant move it around enought then take it off and slightly elongate the holes so you have some play in it. mount back on hte TB and move it around to the setting. remember by adjusting this make sure you have your timing set correctly. evertime you adjust the timing makesure the TPS is where it should be. since the timing and TPS go hand and hand. also the tps adjustment also goes hand and hand with the idle adjustment. you can set the TPS with the car off but with the key in the run position.that setting should read around 85. i would only set it this way if your TPS is jumping around when you try to adjust it. if you set it the first way i explained you should be set. if not ask again and ill explain even more
