Default tranny and new shifter question

So my fellas,
Getting down to putting the motor back in and did the short throw shifter and seal I had to do on the tranny today. Problem, maybe not, even when the old shifter was in the tranny I was not able to move it from gear to gear. Is this just because I am not getting enough force on it without it being mounted? It is just sitting on the dining room table getting cleaned up. I wanted to set the shift stops and now I can not, so should I just wait to get it back in the car? Thanks I hope that this is just normal cause im freaking out that it does not move.

something is bound up inside. I was able to change gears in my T5 without even having a shifter on it.

Hey guys quick update, just rotated the shaft and what not for a couple of seconds. Literally did not do anything and now the input shaft rotates along with the output shaft. Problem is it still will not come out of third gear, once I start trying to push it out of third gear it starts to lock up again. I was about to take it apart until this happened.

I would've had that transmission disassembled and fixed by now... stop screwing around.

See if I was just screwing around you would be correct, but I have actually been busy with school. I will be taking it apart in two weekends. I was just sawing that everything rotated all the way through now.
