67 289 to 351w swap
I have a 67 mustang coupe with a 289 and am thinking about swapping the engine for a 351W. I was wondering if anybody has done this conversion or anybody in general that could offer me some advice. I have heard both that the 351W will fit the stock motor mounts and will fit under the hood, but i have also heard that it will require a hood with a cowl and that it will hit the shock towers. I want to upgrade to the 351W or should i just stick with the 289 and put some more performance parts on it?

Motor mounting is the same, but might have some hood clearance issues that can solved with a drop base air cleaner. If you want to truely upgrade, do the swap, you won't be sorry except for a possible snowball effect on the rest of the drivetrain.

Put that bad boy in there, and get a fiberglass 3" cowl hood. Cool factor of 10! As far as the towers, it just depends on the Headers. A couple of the plugs are a PITA, but for the power gain, WELL WORTH IT! REMEMBER, thet are both SBF, so it will work. LUCK!

The enigine I am looking at buying the guy said has a bad rod bearing. I am probably going to rebuild the engine anyway, and was wondering if you guys had any suggestions of components I should put in it. I am not looking to dump like $3k into this, for now just want a good daily driver that has plenty of pwer to smoke little rice burners off the line.

OK, some year 351's are better than others, what did this one come out of, and what year of car??? Do you personally know any info, or trust the guy selling it, to take that as all as being wrong with it??? What size carb does it have, and is the dist the kind with points and condenser??? Probably a yes on the last part. You can build a badazz 351, but you gotta also remember, SPEED COSTS MONEY. You can get a re-build kit from any of the big parts houses, the strength of the engine is all about the parts, and that's all about how much are you willing to spend.

That is the reason that I am a little reluctant to buy the motor: I don't know what kind of condtion it is in. The guy said it is a 69 engine that used to be in a station wagon and then a boat. He said that he stopped running it shortly after the rod bearing went bad. I asked him about the block and he said it is in good condition with no signs of cracking or over heating. I am hesitant to buy it because it is on eBay and I guess it could be in any condition, but it is covered under PayPal's protection program. It is listed for 300, but I could get it for less. The guy says it includes Block ,heads and 4V intake,The front sump pan and a 10qt cast aluminum oil pan. Also included is the mallory Unilite distributor.

From the pics, it don't look in too bad of shape. Lot of rust, but I guess thats from being in a boat. The lifter valley looks very clean, as did the oil pan. I don't know, it's really up to you. Why don't you do a little more digging, you might find one running for a couple hundred more.

I would wait a while and find a cheaper buy, but if you want that motor, I believe the '69 block is a good find.. I would ask him to take pics of the serial number on the block. If its really a 69 it will say C9, C=60's, 9 = 1969. D would be 70's, so D1 would be '71.. you get the idear. I got my complete 351w for 50 bucks, pulled from a running car. I wasnt really looking for it at the time, it kinda wandered upon me, but I would suggest you just wait alittle while, im sure you can find one cheaper.

UP until 94. You can even pull the whole EFI system with it. Stick with a 90-93 and you'll have no worries. Pull it with the transmission, if the fluid is good, and you got performance gearing as well as overdrive.
