I agree with gears, I have a 92 lx vert auto(for now) and when put 4.10 gears in it really woke up. As far as GT40 vs GT40P I am on this topic now, the GT40p's are newer and have the spark plugs in a different place, which means in most applications you need different headers. They are also supposed to flow a bit better I believe. As far me I think I'm just going to use whichever ones I can get my hands on and port them. There seems to be many people who run those heads on here so maybe they will chime in to help you more than I could.

they perform better because the spark plug angle is supposed to be more optimal for combustion

gt40ps flow better and create more of a "swirl" in the combustion chamber, i picked up a pair a lot of long tubes work with them you just need 90 boots on some of your spark plugs and it adds extra time changing plugs

Free mods/cheap mods: bump up timing, remove air silencer in fender(if not done already), clean out MAF(a dirty one will really hurt your performance). But first I would install a transmission cooler and a shift kit. No needing adding a lot of mods only to have your AOD break down on you.
