Mine was running extremely rich and hunting badly. It wound up being the TPS. Vacuum leaks cause to run LEAN not rich.

I recommend an MSD 6A unit for your ignition.

If you put a digital voltage meter on the sensor (green and ground, I think) and see non-linear progression as you open the throttle with the ignition on (engine off). Also a really bad sensor like mine was will cause surging even at light throttle conditions and horribly rich (black smoke). I went thru a half tank of gas to drive 20 miles.

Hi,

Is the CEL on? Start there first.

mustangsneverdie covered what you need to check, unless you have a SD stang, not MAF, depending on your year.

O2 sensors can be checked with a DVOM. Your going to be checking the millivolts from 0.2 to 0.8 and seeing how quick it switches. If the o2 sensor has a constant low voltage, that will increase the pulse width of the injectors.

Theres lots to check.....

What are you working on? Mustang or 88 Cougar? If SD, then look into the MAP sensor and the vacuum line to it.
