5.4 2v swap questions
Im goona have to put a new engine in my car before to long and had some question on the 5.4 2v engine
1. can you still use a front sturt town bar with this swap since the engine sits higher
2. will my timing cover fit on the 5.4
I know i will have to modify my hood a little if you use the adpater plates with the stock intake
I can get a pi 4.6 2v long block engine or a pi 5.4 2v long block engine with a 3 year warranty for the same price $2200.
Or I can get a brand new pi engine with all accessories for $2900
or a pi engine with 60k for $1500
I would like to do the 5.4 but if its to much rigging to make it work i dont want it. just need a realiable engine.
I also thought about get my stock npi engine block rebuilt and putting the mmr 300rwhp pack on there. but that depends on how much it cost to rebuild a stock bottom end.

i have all your answers dont do it. just finished mine a couple mo. ago, no one makes a intake that has enough flow unless you want to spend 1600.00 and have a sheetmetal intake built thru logan. No one makes a long tube header you have to have one custom built, plan on spending at least 1500.00 if u are putting the motor in a gt, to change a valve cover gasket you have to pull your motor. Better port the **** out of your heads and put a big 5.4 custom grind cam in it,and neither the head or cam r going to do u any good unless u put the logan on it and be ready to pull to 7000 plus, oh and than there is always the gt computer that might not process the information fast enough past7200 u my have to switch it out.any other ? let me know.oh ya buy a new hood!

incorrect again. ONE company currently does make longtube headers for the 5.4 swapped mustang and they have been for a while, but they are about 1000$.

Can't you just use shortys, i have heard the ford racing shortys fit the 5.4 very well. Im not looking for a screamer that I take to the drag strip, i just want something reliable to DD and to autocross with every once in awhile. and the low end torque of the 5.4 would be good for autocorss and cruising some back roads.

I had thought about buying a new 05-10 production 3v short block from LMR
but never could get enough info about puting pi head on it and if timing cover would transfer over from my NPI block and motor mounts.
plus a new short block is $1800+800 for PI heads+ 200 for new timing chains and another 2-400 misc. thats about $3200 for that setup
5.4 route $2200 for a complete long block with 3 year unlimited mileage warranty+$700 intake+$300 headers+2-400 misc. =$3600 but more power
Or rebuilt stock NPI short block est. $1200 with MHRs 300 rwhp kit $2000 for $3200
Which ever one will be the easiest and most realiable is what I want.
Which ever setup would be easier

err hps is the company i ment. i dunno where mhs came from.
shorties work fine. you may have to widen the H pipe an inch or so, some people have to some people dont.
the 5.4L is taller than the 4.6, yoi do not believe the 4.6 timing cover fits.

If you must have a 5.4, Id go with the 4V out of the 1999+ Navi. They are numerous and availible for around 1500-2k at local junkyards. Here's the FAQ on it:

The stock computer should work fine.
The intake is def. not 1500$ Sullivan makes a nice intake for around 650 bucks if memory serves me right. HPS also makes them. The Sullivan will fit under your stock hood.
If you are concerned about weight and still want a 4v engine, go with an Italian block (Teksid Block) 4.6 4V out of a Mark VIII. Its cheaper and lighter than a termi block and can handle 1000+HP easy if you put a forged rotating assembly in it. If its the bigger size you want, there are a few companies that sell a forged stroker kit for around 1k minus pistons (this way you choose the overbore). This is a good choice if you wanna boost it later on down the road and the Mark VIII's powerplant isn't slow in stock form either coming in with 290 Stock HP.
Also, if you go to your local u-pull-it or pull-a-part yard, you may luck out on a Teksid block 4.6 as the engines are sold at a flat-rate. (About 200$)
The 5.4L 2V only weighs 25LB more than your stock 4.6L. Its the same block.
Mod engine weights in LBS:
4.6L SOHC 500 lbs.
5.4L SOHC 525 lbs
4.6L DOHC Aluminum Block 425 lbs
5.4L DOHC 540 lbs
6.8L SOHC V-10 640 lbs.
The stock strut tower bar should work, but I would measure to make sure.
Exhaust-wise, you will probably have to use a shorty header as you have less clearance due to the wider stance of the engine. I know the 5.4 4V is 28 1/4" wide as opposed to the 4.6 4V's stance of 26 5/8"
You wont have to do much rigging. And if you keep the emissions equipment in tact and hooked up, you'll pass...
