Good deal on a 302?
So I have already been talking to the guy and plan on picking it up just wanted to know yall's opinion on it since i'm new to this. I found a 302 shortblock for sale for $200.00. It has ARP rod bolts, ARP mail studs, DSS flat top pistons, and a comp flat tappet cam. Then stock crank and rods. But I want to have the 302 to build up and over time swap out my 289 for it. I figured with the cam and pistons alone its worth the 200, I just wanted to get a 2nd opinion I guess.
It's also on a skid, oiled and wrapped in plastic so its been stored good atleast

I have no idea if you could tell by the pic, I don't know a whole lot about performance parts and all that fun stuff, but I'm guessing you won't be able to tell from a pic of it. I would ask if he has any receipts, but he probably won't since a good chunk of car people like to do this stuff themselves. If it runs good, I'd say go for it. If it turns out it's not modified, worst case scenario is you got a good deal on a 302 that you can build to your liking. It's always hard to tell with an engine if it's good or not. You're really not going to know until you tear into it.

There isn't much to tear into, its basically just the shortblock with a cam, pistons, and stock crank and rod. He said that it ran great when it was in his mustang it would just smoke a little. But with it going to be rebuilt that should be taken care of. So with not much there I guess its is a 302 block alone with a cam and pistons worth 200?

If it helps, I paid $300 for a 1990 302HO short block.
Roller block
HO cam
stock rods & crank
Forged pistons
You don't say the year but it looks like its got XXX in the galley, if so could it be a roller but why would they put a flat tappet cam in it? I don'e see the threaded holes for the spider though. Am I seeing things? Might want to get the casting number and double check.
If its something you want to build up over time make sure its a roller block, otherwise I'd keep looking until I found one, but that's just me.
