Default Crate Motor Suggestions

Hello all, i was gonna start this in my old Mach 1 thread but i decided this may be a little more specific.

Right now i have a Stock 302 in my 69 Mach 1. I want to get up to the 400hp range and was pretty much thinking with getting a 351W Crate motor would be better/cheaper/more reliable than supercharging or I/H/C.

Here are the two sites i was mainly looking at for the crate motors:
FordCobraEngines.com
and
ProformanceUnlimited

What do you all suggest? I'd like to keep the final new engine cost under 7k.

There was a post recently about crate engines. There is a company that sells engines on ebay. THey are called T&L engines. I have heard they are pretty reputable. I plan on buying my engine from them sometime this year. The build you an engine from a seasoned ford block.

They are very well priced IMO.

I would say check em out. They offer anywhere from a 347 to a 427.

Thats the 347 and the engine i plan to buy. They offer a 1 year, 12,000 mile warranty so in my mind, you can;t really go wrong.

But i've heard a stroked engines reliabilty is decreased. And theres not much more room to upgrade that stroker engine the way it is now. What do you think of a 347 stroker compared to a 351?

your right about the stroker engines have decrease life span. The 351 is a strong block, and the only reason i am going to go with a 347 is because of the deal I can get on it. You can get the power of a 351(minus a bit) for the price of a 302.

Once my car is no longer my daily driver(and i have a little more money), I will swap the 347 out for a big block.

I've got a "little" 429 SCJ posted on this forum. I'll be pulling and selling it soon for a lot less than 7K. If you don't mind a little thing like 2 holleys poking though the hood......... Or you could take them off and use a low profile single 4 intake. Just a thought. Dean

Glad to here you plan to buy from Tand L because I work there. Back in the 80s and 90s they built just about all of the bush series engines. By the way just had a 427 winsor go thur the dino put out close to 600 hp at 6000 rpm.

yea i was reading about that. that is Crazy!!!! this is my frist muscle car so i'm going to start with the 347, then maybe in a few years, i will upgrade to the 427. Or maybe one of your big blocks.

I have a question for you considering you work there.

Why is it that they are such a great deal. Is it that they are seasoned blocks?

Thanks

Chris

seasoned block are part of the reason but I couldn't say why mostly because I'm a machinest and never know the prices of things coming in or going out. I will I can't wait untell I'm in the position to pull my engine out and take it over there to make it a 347 or 352 depending on how worn the cylinders are. also the weak part of the 347s is the small main caps that can be improved with a gridle
