'66 engine size..
So my granpa is lettin me use his 66 mustang if i fix it up for him. Hes willing to put money in it, and so i wanna put the biggest engine i can fit in there (so does he) without cuttin ne thing. I heard the biggest was a 302. Right now hes got a little straight 6, 200 in there! there enough room left to live in there. and also....if i put in a larger engine, with the back end be able to hold up? of will a 289 just tear it apart. the transmission will be replaced too, cause right now there only 3 on the floor, and i KNOW that is not gunna work for a 289......thank for ne help!!

I've been there. The best thing you can do is find a donor car, a good junk yard, or have really deep pockets and buy everything new. You definitely will have to drop the little 2.77 three speed. You'll also need a new rear end. I know someone has told you the little six's rear end will hold (someone always does) but it won't. You'll need v8 motor mount brackets ( they're different than the six) and v8 throttle linkage (everythig from pedal to carburetor). The good news is the holes for mounting both are there even though they aren't used with the six. You'll also need v8 front spindles and brakes. If you really want improvement buy a disc conversion or do the Granada spindle/disc conversion. I used factory 67 drum brakes and trust me stopping is, well, interesting. If you have a lead foot like mine definitely go for the discs. I also had to put a set of v8 coil springs on the front. I guess it depends on the condition of yours because I know others that haven't. Remember, changing the spindles and rear end will change the car to 5 lug pattern so you'll need new wheels too. That's all I can think of , I've heard you need bigger fuel lines but I used the same and didn't notice a difference. As for size without cutting a 351 windsor is all you can do. But remember, there's always strokers!

my 66 hasa swapped 289 frum a 200 v6. i strongly recommend uprading the rear. the rear axle cant handle the torque as well and i blew my differential doin one too many burnouts i learned frum my mistakes but u should put on new springs and stuff. all of my shocks, struts, springs, everything else is still all v6. boost all that up when u put in new motor.

RE: '66 engine size..
hey i was in the same situation on deciding what to do with my car, well for me i have a 69 coupe originally it was a 200 the good thing was the rear end was an 8 inch lol which i am now replacing the differential with a 8 inch posi with 3:55 gears, the new engine will tare up the rear that had the six, ive seen it happen. now with the engine the biggest is up too i think a 429 that i have seen and for my year if i were you i would study my car from scratch the history mods etc, for starters well what i did was look around in the classifieds or cragislist.com, junkyards etc and i found 5.0. engine (they are 302's) from an 82 gt. well i changed the motor mounts and did the disc conversion i did the whole works but that was then now i have a 347 stroker i got tired of my 50 engine and i sold it lol now im deciding wither upgrading with a 393 or maybe 429 cobra jet not sure yet but i mean with the disc coversion and other stuff u need go to mustangsplus.com they should have everything what you looking for. now another question is how much are u going to but in?? you should ask your self that... also do u want ur car to be a daily driver or a prostreet, drag etc.... i mean its all up to you what and how much money ur going to put in it.....

rwcstang, If you are going to go with that much motor, you should consider going with a 9 inch. 8 inch cases have a tendency to crack at the pinion gear pilot bearing when you put big HP through them.
