looking for 8.8 with disc were do i start
i just finished my progjects i ahd going on my car and now want to find my 8.8 rear end. This will be the first time ive really looked into what i want for my rear end and i need to know as much as possible( it always seems to help). So far i know i want this; 8.8 with 3.55 or 3.75 gears, definatly want disc setup with like 10" rotors, and something thats not to hard to modify so it will work. So my question is this, were do i start were do i go to find this rear end and what type of car can i get it from and what kind of mods will i have to do? Any imput would help. thanks.

the disc rears are quit large but the 87-88 turbo coupe has 8.8 with 3.55(man) and 3.73 gears with the auto but they are 4 lug. lincoln mark 7 diesels have 5 lug 3.73 rears.

why the 8.8? your going to have trouble finding something that isn't a four lug setup....you might as well go for a 9", or hell, buy a pumpkin for the 8" and be done with it. Do you need the bigger 8.8 for power? whats the deal...

flea bay 5-lug conversion auction
Here is a used 5-lug conversion setup...now just find a donor 8.8 and you're good to go.

As an example you can view, I did a write up on putting an 8.8" into my '66. It's on the web page in my signature. There is a hell of a lot to think about, and I would suggest you research this thoroughly before spending any money. I've got roughly $1,600.00 invested in mine (includes the Cobra brake setup). Everything except the housing is new. All the work done myself. You could do it for as little as $200-$300 if you are willing to rumage the wrecking yards. There are many different approaches to take. 8.8" is a great rear end, just need to make sure you know what you're getting into.
You'll find a lot on the 5.0 forum as well. The kicker to putting an 8.8" into a classic is the differing widths.
Good luck,

RE: looking for 8.8 with disc were do i start
sorry its been a while since i updated but im pretty busy getting the car back on the road. So far this is what ive run into and the reasons why i need a new rear end. First off i did the granada swap in the front and setup my brakelines to handle disc in the back(my perportioning valve is al full front preasure to deal with this lol) cuz that has been my intention for some time now, put in a new rearend and upgrade the brakes aswell, i was planning on doing it down the road tho. Secondly im dropping in a 87-89 5.0L and making like 350hp so id wanna upgrade from the 40 year old 8inch to somethnig stronger. Lastly, I just got back from the alignment shop, and along with a few other problems, my axle is bent so that one of my rear tires is tilted out wards [:@] so deffinately needto fix that lol. As far as the 8.8, i was talking with a guy i know whos been around mustangs for a long time and said that i could probably build a 9 inch with the gears i want and LS for cheaper and easier than either building up and 8.8 or and 8. So i wanna find a 9" housing 3rd member and gears and such then chop off the axles and put the ones i have one my 8" on to the 9" and build it that way. So i was wondering what you guys think about that have u heard bad or is it my best bet?

You can grab an 8.8 from a 96-up Exploder. Most had 3.73 gears, some had 3.55, 4.10s were even available. They have disc brakes, 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern, 31 spline axles, and commonly had limited slip. I forget the exact dimentions, but I think it will be about an inch too narrow on each side, but thats easily remedied with spacers or a different offset on the wheel. I could be wrong on this, so measure it up first to be sure. You will have to move the spring perches. I KNOW the v8s had 31 spline axles and limited slip, and Im pretty sure the v6s did too. There should be a tag on the rear cover and on it will say something like 3L73, or 3L55, or whatever gear/carrier it has. You should have no trouble finding one ready to go for under $600.
