Default redline

So I bought a tack for my car. (66) But not for show. It has a adjustable redline marker but I don’t know at what RPM it should be redlining at red line. Any ideas? And if someone knows can they explain the concept to me? or explain it to everybody if you answer on here. I think this might be a question that people think about but never ask because so far everyone I’ve asked has little or no idea.

If it helps. It is a 289, 2brl (changing to 4 brl)

It does have a performance cam so I don’t know if that is an issue.

Thanks for any help.

Javier

5000 is a good rev limit. yes the engine can go higher, but with a 2 barrel it wont rev that high easily. if you change the cam, valve springs, locks and retainers, add the 4 barrel intake, then you can spin it as high as 6000 easily and not worry about it.

stick with 5k and life will be good, and you wont have rods hanging out the side of your block.
nice ride.. red is always fun. I get alot of tickets in my red cars though..

I would go with an Edelbrock Performer and an Edelbrock 500 CFM carb. But, I'm an Edelbrock fan..

I plan on going with the Edelbrock Performer Intake and 500 cfm 4 barrel on my 68. That seemed to be the consensus when I was asking around. Of course, a Holley 4 barrel is a possibility, as well.

Edelbrock RPM Air Gap manif. and Holley Street Avenger carb FTW!!!

As for the tach redline, I have my shift light set to come on at 5200, anything above 6 for me will start floating the valves.

i've gone as much as 6000, but i normally shift at 5500 in a 289 with mild cam, head work, intake etc.

Default I like Thumpin's suggestion

I like Thumpin's idea.
The tach will lag slightly behind the revs. In the heat of battle it's hard to focus on that little pointer. It's very common not to shift until the needle hits the other side, almost like an after thought.
So on a 2V car 5K is a great shift point (IMO).
