Sean while you wait to start cleaning that engine, jump into that compartment and start cleanin! That's the best time to start stripping old paint, filling irrelevant holes and spot weld imperfections, and getting that engine bay nice and smooth. You'll have to post some pics of the engine when you get a chance so everyone sees what you have to work with.

On the engine, just use degreaser and high pressure water afterwards. Then use Automotive Simple Green then high pressure water again. If you are taking parts off the engine, then you can use a wire brush on them with some more degreaser. That diesel should cut most of the thick crub off.

+1, if you're going to use a sand blaster use it in the engine compartment, not on your engine parts! Sand blasters get sand EVERYWHERE so blasting engine components isn't recommended. When I cleaned my I soaked it in GUNK, let it sit for about 30 min., and then took a pressure washer to it. Keep in mind, id your doing this to a partially assembled block, be sure to waterproof important areas like the cylinder bores, intake and/or exhaust ports on the heads, and the plenum opening on the intake.
