1966 auto transmition question
what is the difference in these setting when you shift the car into gear? park,reverse,neutral.....little white dot, big white dot with green dot, low
does the setting with the green dot for every day driving and goes 1st, 2nd, 3rd-and the one with the small white dot starts you in 2nd and then 3rd (no first gear on this setting)

RE: 1966 auto transmition question
All three start out in first gear. However the green dot allows you to go through all three gears without having to manually shift. That is the "Drive" that is a D on most auto transmissions.

If you put the shifter in the white dot position, it will not shift to a higher gear. If you have it in the green position, it will shift through all three gears. Yes, that is the position you need to have it in for daily driving.

Green dot shift pattern ( better known as Cruise - O - Matic ) is PRN231. You're normal driving conditions suggest putting the selector in the green dot position, this will allow normal operation. If you're enduring a long hill climb, you may wish to put it in 2'nd ( or the first gear past N going back ). If you want to hot rod or what have you, you can shift into 1'st ( or the last selection going back ) and then shift into the green dot. The vacum should hold the gear into 2nd as you shift and not allow a down shift back into 1'st.
I had the same trans in my 66'. I went with a traditional shift pattern and firmer shift points when I installed a new valve body.
