Default R+P Shaft Shorten

Howdy- Does anyone know if you can shorten the splined input shaft of a manual rack and pinion? Id like to cut a small section out of the center and re-weld it on, so the splines are still good. I need to move the U joints further apart. Is it a hardened steel? Can it be welded safely? Thanks for any information all!

i know when you install it with knew shafts i think you have to machine the steering shaft to correct length.maybe that's what you have to do. check woth the site and call them before cutting.

There is a splined shaft on your manual R&P? Mine has a double D shaft that was cut to length, no welding.
Did you really mean R&P, or just manual?

I should have specified--nothing on the car is stock--its an 85 for escort manual rack and pinion on a custom handmade mount. The lower universal joint is interfering with my exhaust install, so, I need to relocate it--it really should be closer to the R+P, for which I would like to shorten the splined shaft of the R+P--

You should create a signature with all your relevant stats so we can help you better. Your R&P sounds interesting though, tell us more with pictures.
