Default correct wheels and tires for 68

I have a 68 coupe I bought in Sept that has Magnum 500 14 " style wheels on it. From what I can tell looking up info, the only year Mustang made a 14 inch Magnum is in 69 and it was a 14x6 rim (backspace 4.38). The tires that came on the car are rubbing BAD against the upper control arm. (bad enough to leave an indented circular rub mark) I think the 68's had two style rims; the steel which was 14x5 (backspace 3.88) and the slotted steel with 14x6. (backspace 4.38) My question is, instead of buying wheel spacers, will a differen't size tire work? I will let you now what size tires are currently on the rims when I get home in less that 30 min... Thanks.
