I have a 17" fan on my 289, and it doesn't even come close to hitting the hose. You have something wrong besides the size of the fan blade.

I haven't mounted mine yet, but I got the 17" fan after searching the net. It is "supposed" to fit.
How about measuring the old one, or the shroud opening and subtract an inch...I know, your hands might get dirty compared to the keyboard.

Im putting duel electric fans on my impala. Im using them for more power, and more cooling. However, i wonder how long they are going to last.[&:]

Because it draws more power from my engine than my flex fans. I dropped 200 rpm at idle by just installed electrics. Plus, they're heavier and don't do a better job of cooling, as long as you have a good system, that is.

OEM's went electric for ease of packaging. They can alter the radiator's angle and not worry about the fan placement and creating a huge fan shroud.
