RE: how do you know when to rebuild??
ACtually, how you "manual" shift is you start out in low... when you get to were you want to shift, shift to green dot, and back to low fast. This keeps it from shifting to second and third quickly.

If the 289 is still functioning as it should, no smoke, oil leaks, valve chatter, bearing noise, etc, then more then likely your tranny has seen it's day. Since you've only owned the car 1 year, you have no idea the actual condition of the tranny. Given your driving style, the tranny would be top on my list of suspects.
There is a ton of info out there on C-4's. You can go cheap and have a rebuild for under $500, or pro built for just under $2K. AOD is an option, but the extra hardware will dip into your pocket book to the sum of about $400-600. It's not just slipping in an AOD, it's the cost of the drive line, flex plate, converter, linkage, shifter change, cross memb., etc...Suggestion, do your homework.
Soaring may be right, and you might be very lucky and get by with a band adjustment. . . . for now.

If your not happy with the performance from the vehicle it is time to upgrade and improve the perfromance. Human error is only accountable for various situations. If the car's performance doen't keep you happy it is time for a change!!!!!

Are there any strange or new smells or sounds coming form the car? Does it leak any fluids, and new leaks? Has your fuel economy changed for the worse? Or litteraly is the only problem the sluggish start? What does your trans fluid smell like?
All the above answers given are a great place to start, but we'll need a little more info to really help.

Check the bands on your C4. We have a section in the FAQ about how to tighten them. If they up to snuff, then you may just need a general tuneup on the engine. Check all your fluids carefully.
