Default 4 or 8 cylinder

I just bought a 1968 coupe, vin number in the door reads 8FO1T150074 & is a 6 cyl. car.The car has a 5 wheel lug pattern on front & back. i also have a vin # from the dash & a data plate off the fender next to the tower & they both read 8T01C208625,which is a 8 cyl.car (289).both vins pull up the same paint & interior packages.i heard the 4 cylinder cars had a 4 lug pattern & 8 cyl. cars had a 5 lug, is this true? The frame has not been welded so figure the door has been changed & the data plate is from the donor car.the dash looks factory installed , no signs of poor installation & the factory air vents... all look untouched .so,do ya think this car is supportive of a 300 hp small block??please help, i`m a newbie with the car side of ford. almost finished wih a 70 ranger s.w.b , 351w., a.o.d ,p.s,p.b ,t.s.& everything new on susp.including s.s lines etc.., i also understand the towers gotta go to install a 351,???thanks!!!!

That is correct. The 8 cylinder Mustangs had 5 lug bolts, and the 6 cylinder Mustangs had 4 lug bolts. Obviously, the door on your car is from a 6 banger donor. No, you don't have to remove the shock towers to fit a 351 in there. Go to the FAQ section on top and read your heart out.

pretty straight forward swap considering the 289 and 351w share the same block

basically the 351W and 289 are the same engine. Motor mounts, trans bolt pattern, exhaust, pulleys etc will all interchange. The only difference of real concern is the 351 deck height is taller thus making the engine a little wider and obviously taller. So the intake and distrubutor will not interchange.
The 68 Mustangs had 428's optional so the basic chassis is more than capable of handling 300hp. Obviously the standard upgrades to the suspension are a bonus, i.e. disk brakes, front coils, export brace/monte carlo bar, sub frame connectors, anti sway bars, etc. but the short answer is your 351 will drop right in. Don't forget a good radiator! The C4 was used on 6 cyl. and v8's and will hold up to big blocks if prepared correctly. The rear end may be an 8" if swapped over to 5 lug. For normal abuse it will hold up well too.

Well, then you can't read very well. This was taken right out of the FAQ section above. Although targeting the 65 and 66, all here applies to your car.

The long tube headers should work okay, again because the block is taller/wider you may have some fit issues with off-the-shelf exhaust kits for the 289/302 but a good muffler shop can make a set of duals for the headers you have. Some headers interfer with the power steering and if you have PS you may need a bracket to relocate the cyl. These are available from most places that sell headers. Good luck with the swap.
