Headlight quick fix
The headlights on my 68 stang are quite lousy. I admit i do have bad vision but more light is obviously needed....
How do i go about finding more powerful or brighter bulbs for such and old car?
Thanks

RE: Headlight quick fix
Hi !
if you are a bit technical/electronic then Aussies post is just the right thing for you.
Mustang headlamps are known to be very dim.
Reason for this is that the cable the headlight gest their power from is run through your dash and Firewall and dodgy connectors.
What the post with the relays is all about is what is done in every single modern car.
battery plus --------- -------- headlight switch
| |
A| B|
----------
| |
| RELAY |
| |
----------
C| D|
| |
headlights --------- -------- ground
basically when you turn on the headlight switch, the relay will connect A and C giving power to headlights
The power for the headlights can be short cable then as well it could lead higher amps.
what the mustang originally has is:
battery plus -----~-----switch-----~------headlight
so that the power the headlights pull go through your switch as well
anyone correct me please if that's not right :-)

RE: Headlight quick fix
Actually you don't need to redo your cabling. Just add to it.
this the simple explanation:
get the 2 relais and cable
connect fused battery plus to pin #30 on both relais
connect ground to pin #85 on both relais
then split the green-black cable (high beam going to lamp from firewall)
Connect one end to #87 and the other to #86 on the same relais
do the same to the red-black cable (headlight going to lamp from firewall)
red-black is normal headlight and the green-black is high beam
that's about the whole trick. (oh and yes. disconnect the battery before you start)

Spot on Kalli
if you really want to get carried away, do as Kalli said and also replace the wires and plugs to the headlights. Then get a halogen replacement kit and swap out the old sealed beam units (where if it blows you replace the whole headlight) for H4 globed ones. If they blow you just replace the globe likea modern car. Lighting system remains stock to look at but is effectively updated.
The conversion kits are available from most parts outlets. Not sure of the cost over there, but here they are about $50
have fun!

I don't know if it will improve the headlights, but I am going to try the relay wiring thing. http://www.midnightdsigns.com/james/headlights.htm
I will get back in a month or so to let you know if it works. I come home for community band practice and I can't see chit; even on bright. Hell, other cars don't even blink at me when I leave them on bright when approaching them, and I have Halogen bulbs.
