Tremec T56 retrofit help
Hey guys, I have a 69 mustang coupe with a 1975 351w and I want to put a t56 in it. Im tryign to get one out of a 03 and up viper or corvette, to have that nice .5OD gear. I was wondering if there are any adaptors to make this bold right up. Also are there any other cars with this trans in it that I can snag it from. I need the trans with 550 ft lb tq capacity and want the .5 OD. I also wanted to know if there are any guides to do this. I know the floor will have to be cut out to get this big boy in there but any guides would be great. Thanks in advance

Isn't the Vette a trans-axle? Won't work if it is. Why not get a 6-speed from a Camaro/Firebird?
Why not just use a Ttremec 5-speed like the guy said? Easier to do, works great, Just how many gears do we need on the street with a torque motor? My 289 gets along just fine with a 3.25 gear and a 38% overdrive.
But that is just me. I'll take easy/engineered over 'how-the-hell-do-I-get-this-thing-to-fit' anyday.

RE: Tremech T56 retrofit help
im going to be running a 4.10 rear and want the high od to get decent milage, and my engine will blow apart a camero trans, especially since im planning a blower and or spray in the future. My engine is a solid 425hp and 450 ft lb tq.I was told the c5 vette has better gearing then the c6. However i was told the 01/02 vette had an aluminum fork where the 03/04 has a steel one. Im debating and am kinda new to this transmission thing, my cars got a 2.79 open rear with a c6 auto now and its boring, i mean the car still hauls but I want it to be dangerious to drive anyone have any input on what you think is better?

RE: Tremech T56 retrofit help
I am going to have to stick with the popular opinion here. I would go with a TKO rated at 600
torque with a .68 or .82 overdrive. It seems to me that with your strong performance engine, a .
50 OD might put your engine out of the power band anyway, thereby mitigating, or even eliminating,
any economy gains you might see with the lower engine speed.
By my math, (which might not be right, but I think it is!!) I come up with the following effective ratios with your 4.10s:
.82(or118%)= 3.47 to 1
.68(or 128%) = 2.97 to 1
.50(or 150%) = 2.73 to 1
You will want to take into account that taller tires will effectivly
"lower the gearing" when compared with stockheight tires as well.
It is my understanding that the TKO swap is fairly simple and straight forward, I will know for sure in the
next few weeks. I am doing a project with 4.10 gears as well, up untill just now, I was thinking of using the
.68 OD trans, but after I have (just now) worked out the final ratio, I am think I will go with the .82s
Mainly because the engine that we are building is not going to be at its strongest down low.
I keep reading that for maximum economy, an engine needs to be running at very close to peak
torque at crusing speed, I dont think you will be that close with 1.50 OD using the engine you describe.
In other words you might get less fuel economy with the taller OD. I would think about it for a while before I bought any parts!!
(also, there is plenty of excellent help on this forum for this swap!!!!!)

RE: Tremech T56 retrofit help
well I know this engine has a lot of low end but yes it dose hit peak torque at 4400rpm and peak hp at 5700. So your sayign having it turn a higher rpm might increase gas milage? How much because id rather have the engine turning less rpms to cut down on engine wear then have a slightly better gas milage. However what is this TKO trans and what vehicles is it out of, Iv never herd of it before this thread.
EDIT: is the tko a gm trans package?
