Default Converting a coupe to a fastback ???

I have been planning to [dreaming about] buildinga 67/68 mustangfor a while now. Watching prices, clearly a fastback is way more $$ than a coupe. Even a rusty train-wreck fastback is $3K+, but a similar coupe is just this side of free. If I have to do metal work anyway... why not cut down the top and back--and 'fastback' a coupe? I saw a 'fender-extension' on ebay about a month ago that I was not craze about, that's not what I mean.

(I hope I don't offend the 'matching number' restoration crowd 8b )

Anyone with experience doing this? How about anyone who knows what the body structure differences might be like. Any suggested sources for exploded diagrams of both/either?

Thanks --Jay

I'll be interested to see any responses on this also. My friend is about to try this same thing.

I've seen a few that have been done that way, but I haven't seen any done well. That gives me the impression that it's harder than it looks.

From what I remember, they had more trouble making the interiorcome out wellthan they did with the exterior sheetmetal.

Sorry to hijack the thread, five pt oh, is that coupe in that picture Champagne Beige? If it is, its one of the colors I'm considering painting mine.

it can be done but the time involved and the special interior pieces etc that will have to be track down will be kinda hard to get ull definitely be ahead if u sell the coupe and buy a fastback

It was origionally that bronze color. Then in 1972 the 2nd owner had it painted a very similar (but lighter) color. Sorry I'm not sure of the name of the color. I've got the reciept, but all it says is, "Paint entire car.....$250."

You really want to paint yours something like that? I wouldn't. For the 13yrs I've owned it I've wanted to paint it another color. I expect I'll get it done in the next 6 months, but I assure you it won't be that gold color again.

edit: looking at the pic you posted in the next post, that is the color it started out as (the inside of the trunk and underside of the hood still is). The repaint though is a little lighter and more shinny now.

I like that look. This is what I want mine to look like, except with hardtop and black interior.

This is Champagne Biege.

back to the original topic, it is possible but not probable, just think, you have to be a GOOD bodyman, i mean as good as Thumpin, to pull this off if you cut the roof off to make it a convert or fastback, and you do it wrong, now you have a ****ed up monster of a stang you dont even want.

try it, but in the end you may have no stang, i would just keep the coupe

I don't get this especially since I personally like the look of coupes better.

If you really, really, got to have a fastback, just get a rust bucket with nothing on it and slowly restore it like that over the years, that's if money is an issue, and if it's not, just simply buy a decent fastback...don't destroy a perfectly good coupe.

heres one some guy did youll see all the work in the pics http://web.infoave.net/~ronniek/11.html only real problem is its a unibody car do it wrong youll weaken the car. and the vin will show its a coupe not a fastback which will make it worthless then a true fastback if you sell it. id buy a fastback or get the dynacorn 67 fastback shell when they come out http://www.dynacornclassicbodies.com/models.html
