Default Rear end Swap

I have a 1966 mustang and I want to swap the 4 lug rear endin for a 5 lug rear end. What are the best bolt on donor cars.

I installed a new Holley 2300 Carb but the original throttle rod is too short. Any suggestions on where to find an extention or a longer throttle would be helpful.

Thanks

don't know about the throttle rod, but there was just a post on this the other day:

Lots of posts pull up on a search, too.

Good luck

Here's an article packed full of other donor cars for your rear and they are all 9 inch rears.

Here are the years/models with the same rear end size asyour car. Your best bet is finding a V8 Mustang in a wrecking yard and taking that rear end out to be overhauled.

'57-'59 FORD/EDSEL
'63-'69 FALCON
'63-'69 COMET
'63-'65 FAIRLANE
'65-'66 MUSTANG
'66-FAIRLANE/CYCLONE

You can add late 50's and early to mid 60's trucks as well, but they are getting harder and harder to find in a junk yard. When you find the 9", measure it. It should be 57.25 inches from flange to flange. 52.25" if measured from end of axle tube. If you are going to change out the rear anyway, don't settle for an 8" if you plan to heat up that V8 engine at all. You do have a V8 now, don't you? If not that 7.5 inch rear is all that 200 I6 needs.

Sorry to hijack, a little, but Soaring, what do you mean by "If not, that 7.5 inch rear is all that 200 I6 needs."? I have a 200 - surely you don't mean I can use the stock housing, do you? Or do you mean, that 9" isn't really needed for the low powered I6? Thanks

Yeah, I mean the I6 200 doesn't need anymore than the 7.5 inch rear that came with it from the factory. However, I think the original poster wants to add some better wheels to his mustang, and the 4 bolt wheels don't offer much of a variety with a 6 banger Mustang.

lol, I couldn't find what you said

Wow, that opens another can of worms....Now I'm super confused - all I need is to change the axles? (+ all of the disc brake hardware stuff).

Sorry, but all of the write-ups and how-to's I've seen all went to a larger axle, which I don't need. Know of any place to look where I can keep the stock axle?

with the 4 lug its a 7.5 rear end no one makes 5 lug axles for it you have to change out the rear end for a 8 inch or 9 inch .yeah if your sticking with the inline 6 a 8 inch is more then enough if you want a mean nasty v8 a 9inch is a must

To answer a lot of questions. I have decided to keep the I6 200ci with some modifications to hop it up. I have converted the the front to disc brakes and I want to have a matching 5 lug rear. With what I am doing, I only need an 8 inch rear but I have no problem with a 9 inch risk. You speed demons might think this is a waste but I am a 30 something who will drive this car on Fridays and to the golf course with a cigar hanging out of my mouth. Build cars is a new hobby that I have always want to do but I couldn't afford it until now.
