Default vin number troubles

Igot a 67mustang coupe a year ago and started working on it without worrying about the ownership or anything like that because i pulled it out of a farmers field down the street from my house. the other week i went to theDMVclosest to my house and brought them the number that was printed on the drivers side inner fender where i had been told it would be by many websites and they told me that it was not a vin number and that it was a warranty number. i have since looked all over the vehicle and still have come up empty handed with the vin number. does any one know where it is or if i can track by the warranty number? thanks

Very often DMV workers are "confused" by the short VIN numbers from older vehicles. If memory serves me right, I think that the VIN you got from the fender should be legit.

Yes. Prior to the 80s vin numbers were a couple digits shorter.

What state are you in - other than confusion? It makes a difference as to the laws and how to deal with them. When dealing with the DMV in California, and I would believe in most other states, make sure you know the laws before you go in to do business with them. The people behind the counter work from a book and are programmed to be a pain in the ***.

the Vin number is the full11 letters and numberson the fender
eg 7R09A123456

the exact same number was called the Warranty number on the door data plate.

the first 5 designate year, place of manufacture, body style and engine. the last 6 are the consecutive unit number.

if they still dont get it, take a pic in

When I had a check run on mine by a state cop freind.I had to explain several times that the 17 digit began in 1981(I beleive) and the 11 digit was correct. Finally he took my word on it and ran it. He said he never knew that.. He is in his late twenties so I am sure he does not deal with these often... Good luck..

Actually that is called the warranty number, but it is the number that you need to register your car. Most of us call it the VIN number, because in actuality, it identifies your vehicle. That is the number you need to register your, so go back to the dumb DMV clerk and explain it to them, that we have less numbers in our VIN than later models, and that the inner fender number is the only number they can use to register the car.

Hi, can anyone help me sort out a build date for my 1966 Mustang GT. It's had a door change at some point, and lost the original VIN tag. I have some info which tells me it was built at San Jose but I'm trying to pin down the actual date. The warranty number is 6RO7A206813 so if anybody has a San jose built '66 with a consecutive unit number anywhere near 206813, can you tell me your date code so that I can try and estimate mine? ALL HELP WILL BE MUCH APPRECIATED, THANKS.
