200 ci 6 banger - rebuild, replace, or tuneup?

Essentially I had the same dilemma as you are having. I also don't think I could have spent more figuring it out either. Rebuilt my 200, then later decided that I was going to do a 302 swap. It is a lot of work, but it is definitely worth it. Even after rebuilding the 200 it still wasn't anything like I was expecting. So its really up to you, the 200 ran well, but the 302 is much more fun.

Is it the original engine? If so, keep it and take advantage of the gas savings. If its not the original engine, then go custom!

RE: 200 ci 6 banger - rebuild, replace, or tuneup?
My third and currant Mustang is a 66 with a 6 banger. I ruined my first love a 68 Coupe by putting in a junkyard motor and having no idea what I was doing. I personally havethree problems changing mine to a V-8.
1) This car was a gift form my Dad and I promised I would not screw it up like the 68.
2) I can do the basics but I don't have the knowledge or the garage to do a swap.
3) I don't have the money to have someone else do it for me.
Mustang Monthly has a real good story on line of a 6 to 8 swap. They figured over $3,000 in suspension parts not including major labor or engine.
I added Clifford Headers and American Racing Aluminum Rims to mine. It soundsand looks good. She won't get there as fast as a 289 but she cruises real nice at 70 down the highway.
Clifford Performancehas a ton of performance parts for the 200 and 260.
My plan is to keep this one a 6 andthe day my daughter graduates from college in two years buy a newMustang GT.

Here is a link to the article http://www.cjponyparts.com/NewTechV8Swap.aspx. Not ever having tried it I have no idea how realistic these prices are or are not.

it's not that far off if you check the article. what annoys me is that they're missing in the price list:
- the rearaxle (even when used they probablyu put down money for it).
I guess they redid all wheel bearings as well ...
- the article ends with:
.... We've got some cool wheels and tires on the way ....
so who paid for them?????

Magazines don't pay for their parts, the mfgs send them stuff for free just so they'll use it. The cost they quote are usually list price, which nobody pays. Retail is usually about 70% of list.
BTW, unit91, I'm glad you're back in one piece and thank you very much for your service.
