Default 200 ci 6 banger - rebuild, replace, or tuneup?

It's HOT here in Bagdad - 114 today. Hope you all are doing well. We're OK and in one piece! I'm looking ahead to homecoming next year, and what to do about my 6 banger. It's a 68 convert, 3 speed auto, and the engine is tired. Has an aftermarket carb on it which might be most of the problem, but it does smoke somewhat and dies when you punch the accelerator. I probably need a good mechanic to look at it, but I want some input from you guys who've been down this road before. Rebuild vs. replace vs. tuneup. What's a poor old trooper to do? Your advice means a great deal so lay it on me! Check out the photo!

Hey troop. Stay 100 meters back or you will be shot, huh? Sounds like warning enough. I wrote to a troop a few months ago to adopt him, but he didn't respond. So, can I adopt you? That means I will send you things you may not be able to get in Iraq. Toiletries, etc..... I bake a mean batch of chocolate chip cookies too. PM me.
Regarding your tired old I6......wait until you get back home then let's decide. You may even want to upgrade to a V8.

I would up grade 2 a V8. The owner before me rebuiltmy I6and bored it .040. It costed them 2.500 dollars. Alittle much for an I6 i think.

A 6 to V8 conversion takes some work. The 4 lug wheels have to give way to 5 lug, and there is sometimes some powertrain swapping. You can grab a crate motor for around $3,000, but there are hidden cost that often sneek up on you. If you have some smoking issues, try some simple fixes, like synthetic oil, new gaskets. What kind of carb do you have? Carb and fuel issues are often the problem. We 6 guys have to stick together, cause it's a viable alternative. Be safe, God bless.

Keep the 6! If you're up for spending some dough, Mike over at Fordsix.com has made an Aluminum OZ head, and will start selling them soon (I think they're about $1500 after everything). That sure will turn heads!

Oh, and I can't thank you enough! Thanks for serving for our freedom![sm=americanasmiley.gif]

My brother is in the Marines, and he is trying desperately to get over there. He joined and was going to go infantry, but the recruiter asked what he wanted to be later and he said firefighter so he went crash, fire, rescue. Hes assigned to a base in San Diego though and not a wing, so he doesnt get to go.
