Default For those of you with Pertronix

I put a pertronix II ignition as well as a new coil in my 68 Mustang (straight 6). It still taking a while to start up. I'm going to replace the plugs and wires tomorow- what should the gap on the plugs be set to with the new ignition? I may also need to rebuild my carb. Any feed back would be great.

thanks

because it's electronic, i'd go 40-42 easily.

btw, if you mean you have to hold the ign key to get the car to start, check you're timing, you might be too far advanced. you can back off 1-2 degrees comfortably to see if it's better. if that doesn't fix it, then put the timing back, and check other issues, carb; air/fuel, choke, etc.

The Pertronix II unit requires a full 12V at the coil to function properly. The factory ignition includes a pink resistor wire from the ignition switch to the firewall that is designed to supply 6-8V to the coil. Have you bypassed this wire?

you will have to adjust your timing for sure.. you will need a timing light to do this.take the dist bolt loose and turn the dist till it is right..retighten dist.. have fun i turned mine to 12 and it runs much better

starfury is right... the first thong you need to do is make sure you are getting a full 12V.... easiest way to check is to pull a boot off a spark plug and hold it about a 1/4 inch from the exhaust manifold as someone else tries starting the car.... if a blue spark jumps from the boot to the manifold, you've got good spark. then you can move onto other possible problems.

you may have the II ,,but do you have a high volt coil to justify the 40-45 gap on the plugs?

Coil voltage rating is irrelevant if you're only getting 8V to the coil, unless it's a coil designed to be used with a resistor (like the factory coil).
