Probably a stretched drive belt... rubber gets a little finikey after 30 years.

when i was in high school, i made a giant spider web all over my bedroom ceiling out of an 8-track of Jesus Christ Superstar. Nothing blasphemous (sp?) here, i just had no other use for it. Sorry but that is my only experience with 8-tracks.

I know, useless posting here, I should call it a night. Good luck with this one.

sometimes you can take rubbing alcohol and a swab and just clean all of the little rollers and stuff in the player. same method to clean the pickup head. and sometimes the tapes are wound too tight and nothing fixes it, short of running the entire tape through at ffwd. (but I think its probably the dive belt as James suggested)

Boy does this bring back memories, mostly bad ones. The alcohol on a swab cleaning the rollers used to fix most problems. I always had problems when it was too warm and the tape would stick to the rollers and then when it was too cold the tape would get brittle and stick also. These things only worked when they wanted to, usually in 72 degree weather. They were much better than AM radio though.
