You always could dump about 5k in a 6 month CD for emergency breakdowns. And if you don't need it, you have made about $250 in a year.

I'd keep about $1000 laying around. That should get a good start on an engine swap if you burn up your 289 or something; I replaced mine for about$1300. But yeah as some others have mentioned... the rear tires seem to wear out pretty dang fast....

I never had that problem. However, the second day after the suspension rebuild was complete, I was goofing off and stomped on it. Laid down about 30 ft of BFG's. I know I should have not done that, but it caught me by suprise so I just stayed in it til it quit on its own.
