How to "tighten" up my brakes

RE: How to "tighten" up my brakes
The entire car was gutted and everything was replaced, down to the center drag link.
If I hit the brake, the car stops. But -- sometimes -- I have to REALLY push down hard, not all the time. I always pump the brakes as I was told to do, but I can never jam on the brakes, not that I try to too often!

RE: How to "tighten" up my brakes
I'm not in an area full of brake shops or guys who know how to fix classics.
I did hear of a guy a few towns over and plan to see him this week for some work on my Firebird over the winter, plus read about a Mustang restorer not far away.
I find it odd you all think there is an issue yet local mechanics say it's normal for drum brakes.
Leads me to believe there is a problem

Do you know anyone around that has a similar setup on an old Mustang...perhaps that you could drive?
We think it's an issue because YOU think it's an issue. I've got 4 wheel power drums on my old Ford truck and it stops better than you described...

RE: How to "tighten" up my brakes
When I had my drum brakes all the way around (unassisted) the was pedal was stiff. force required to move the pedal down would proportionally increase as the pedal moved down until it reached a point that you could no longer detect the pedal moving down and there was still a good two inches or more before it would hit the floor.
I could lock up the back tires... and all 4 tires for that matter if I pressed hard enough.
If yours does not feel something like that or its impossible to lock up the tires then something is indeed causing an issue.
hope this helps

New England Mustang Club is out of Sturbridge... and Mustang Unlimited has a site in Manchester, CT. They both should have people that can help. Those can't be toooooo far from you. Mass isn't that big*S*

RE: How to "tighten" up my brakes
I emailed the guy who is 2 towns over and advertises on another auto site. He claims to have worked on Mustangs for 8-9 years with his dad and does restorations, so I'll swing by there one day this week with the Mustang and let him check it out.
I just don't want to be told nothing is wrong!
