66 i6 engine problems
I dont know much about engines or cars, but after buying my first 66 mustang coupe with an i6 I've invested just about $2,000 dollars just getting it running. Anyways, I keep stalling out when i slow down( hitting brakes, or turning) and I think it may be my carberator. I have a new fuel pump and new spark plugs and hoses. Anythoughts?

Yep - my guess would be the carb. Perhaps the float level is off... I'd suggest you contact Pony Carburetors and get one of their rebuilt units. They've overcome a couple of the short-comings of the Autolite model you have.

If you're planning on replacing the carburetor, you might want to consider switching to a 2v carb like the Holley 5200 or Weber 32/36. You'd need an adapter, and you'd have to modify the linkage but its a pretty nice upgrade for the I6. You can get a ton of information about the ford I6 engines at http://www.fordsix.com. The folks there have helped me a bunch with mine.

So, you're thinking because his 6-cylinder is stalling - he could either (A) drop in an entire Toyota engine and transmission (including all the attachments and wiring harnesses and unique fixtures and one-off fabricating it would take) exceding the overall value of the entire car by a few thousand dollars, or (B) get a rebuilt carb for a couple hundred bucks...[sm=goodidea.gif]
Isn't that kinda like buying four new rims because you have a flat?

RE: 66 i6 engine problems
My brothers car and mine both did the same thing. I bought a 68 I6 and replaced nearly everything major on the car to get it running the way it is now (which is fairly excellent. still minor problems here and there). In fact my car did the same thing to you when i was taking it to emissions. Died right there in the lane and couldn't get it to stay running. In the end it needed a new carb. you could rebuild it, but i certainly wouldn't just because they tend to not last more then a year especially if you have no idea what your doing. It's up to you, but i'm pretty sure that's what needed.

It could be as simple as an adjustment. However, if the car was sitting for a while it probably has dirt in the carburetor. I'd recommend a rebuild of yours or a rebuilt unit from someone like Pony.

I would put the new carb on, but the Toyota motor would work and you can buy the whole Toyota car cheaper then that. You can get 500 horses out of that motor. I think it would be a great swap.
