Thinking of buying a '66 mustang
Hi there...I'm new here :-) and I hope this is the right place to ask this! I was wondering if anyone who's owned or currently owns a 1966 mustang could give me some ideas on how I can find out more about the vehicle before making a purchase... it has been fully restored, looks fantastic... great shape all around...and the price isn't bad at all, but i want to make an educated decision about it rather than just buy it because I've always really wanted one...
[ol][*]would this type of car hold it's value? not all parts are original, so how does this affect it's value?[*]maintaing this type of car: I've nevr owned a binatge car like this so would it be very costly to upkeep it? it would be a sunday driver, not a daily driver...[*]is there any way to get a history report on this car or find out if it's ever been in any accidents etc?[*]the engine was replaced and the odometer reset therefore... how does this affect it's value?[/ol]anything else anyone has to contribute to help me make an informed decision would be great! thanks to all!!!! I'm excited about the prospect of owning this car but scared to get caught into a money pit at the same time!

Welcome to the forum Francesca. First, if you would, fill in a little more of your profile so we can understand what car you have, where you are, etc. This helps with the explanations.
First, tell us more about the car..perhaps a photo.
Obviously some cars hold their value and appreciate differently than others. Collector versions in original condition or restored accurately cost more and appreciate faster than the general population.
In general however, Mustangs that are restored to weekend driver/good condition, even using nonoriginal parts, will raise in value over time rather than depreciate. The trick is to get it at a fair market price and not get taken when you buy it.
If the car has been fullyrestored...motor replaced, etc., then then upkeep shouldn't be too much.
Sorry, no Carfax for old cars. Best you can do it talk to the current owner and start doing detective work to track back the history.
The engine replaced and odometer reset would affect the price if this was a rare car or concours level restoration. As a hobby car and weekend driver, it won't have a detrimental impact on the cost or resale value.
Lets see a pic of this car!

Thanks for your replies! I have been skimming through the forum to get as much info as possible and I also appreciate all your replies here! I will post a picture if I can get one. I was also wondering... the car is gray with black stripes... was this ever an original color for this model or was it repainted to someone's liking?

RE: Thinking of buying a '66 mustang
The topic of rust has not been addressed. These old mustangs are prown to alot of various rust problems. Soa good question is about previousrust repairs. Any history or documentation is a good thing. Some parts of the country are much more foregiving when it comes to rust. Your dry desert states are the best. The biggest area of rust that is usually not repaired in the cowl. The cowl intake are the vents infront of the windshield. See if the seller will poor a bucket of water in both sides of the cowl. If water leaks out from under the dash onto the floor. The cowl is rusted. To have a shop repair rust in the cowl area can be thousands of dollars.

additional info:
The car has never left the san Jose Area, I am being reassured it has NO rust... asking price is $15,000. The engine is a 302 Cobra and has 10,00 miles on it. The car had been apparised at $12,900 2 years ago before the engine was changed/ odometer reset. Am I getting a good deal on this? the price is inclusive of taxes and registration fees. purchasing from a dealer,. not a private party..... is that an original color? if not, should that affect the value? Thanks to all for your responses!

nice looking car. i find it hard to ever get a god deal from a dealer, but if you like the car and it is around what you want to spend then thats what matters. The car does look very clean. How long have you been looking?

RE: Thinking of buying a '66 mustang
Just being in CA gives you a whole slew of options on finding a mustang, especially if your price range is up to or around 15000 bucks. You can definately find what you are looking for.. Try doing a search on craigslist for your area or on www.collectorcartraderonline.com for your area + 50 miles.. You will find something that catches your eye, and probably in better shape than what you are currently looking at. As stated before you can very well expect to get ripped off by a car dealer trying to get a classic off of his lot. Dont trust it. Buy from an individual that has had the car and knows something about it.
Dont jump on the first one, unless you KNOW that it is the one you want or the deal is too good to pass up. OK.. And keep up with the forum, these guys know what they are talking about.. Any questions you have, bring them up.. Its a pretty open minded group..
