A stock 68 differential is 59.25" from axle plate to axle plate, so at 61 inches it would extend less than an inch wider on each side. The stock spring perch span is 43 inches.

ORIGINAL: 69FECoupe

FWIW - a 66 Galaxie has a coil spring rear, not a leaf type. If it is the right width, you'll need to remove all of the coil spring stuff and install leaf mounts.
You are correct and I was mistaken, a 66 Galaxie does use coil springs so to make it fit ion the Mustang all the coil spring parts would need to be cut off and spring perch plates would need to be welded on.
