Default Ball Stud Control Valve Removal

Hey

Just wanted to know how to get the pitman arm off the ball stud? Do I need a special tool?

I have a '68 FB wth a 302 4V.

I tried taking it off but got stuck at this part. The reason im taking it off is to check if my mechanic cross threaded inside the control valve, should never let these over exuberant lot touch my car...i guess one learns the hard way [:@]

Usually to get the ball stud out takes a special fork that has two wedges. It sort of squeezes out the ball stud. Fact of the matter is it didnt work on mine.

I had to disassemble the control valve then remove the pitman arm from the steering box. Then i took the pitman arm with the ball stud still in it and use a vice or a 25 ton log splitter (cant remember which) to remove the ball stud from the pitman arm.

Good Luck.

I just did this a few weeks ago on my 66. I took the nut off of the ball stud, then from the engine compartment, I set a long rod (in my case it was about a 2 foot, half inch ratchet extension) on top of the stud and smacked the other end with a hammer. It popped right out on the first hit.

As far as removing the control valve, I don't know if yours is the same, but all the ones I have seen have a pin that must be removed from the shaft that the control valve screws onto, before the control valve can be unscrewed from it.

I thought pickle forks were bad to use if you plan on using the same parts. I used it when I rebuilt my suspension, but I wasnt re-using any of the old junk.

Pickle forks are bad on the power steering control valve.I believe they make a pitman arm puller.

I believe that would be the pin that davecole mentioned. I'd probablytry to pull it out with a pair of diagonal cutters.
