Rough idle on 66 coupe

Rough idle on 66 coupe
Just got a 66 coupe (200 6 cyl automatic) yesterday. It has a pretty rough idle when the car is in drive but the brake is depressed. Once the gas is depressed the idle smooths out. Also, when the car is put back in park the idle smooths out. Any thoughts?
Another thing. The blower seems to be working but the car doesn't get warm. Do I need a new thermostat?
Any help appreciated.

What is your idle set at? It may be too low. Also, check ignition timing.
For the heater, has it been bypassed? A lot of them have been due to leaking heater core.
Welcome aboard!

Thanks for the info and thanks for the welcome! I'll check out to see if it's been bypassed. Didn't think of that but it makes perfect sense now.
Also, how do I tell what the idle is set at. I'd be happy to look at both those things and appreciate the heads up.

RE: Rough idle on 66 coupe
Hi Michelle...welcome to MF!
Steve's advice above is spot on...either idle speed or ignition advance. Not sure about your automotive technical expertise, so don't be insulted..*S*
Rough idle: There is an idle set screw on the side of your carburator, it is used to open/close an air port which raises/lowers the idle speed. I would not mess with this until second. First, check the engine timing to see if it is timed to specification. If you are not familiar with this, you can hopefully get a friend to help/show you, or if not take it to a local shop and ask them to set it. Adjusting the timing will also speed/slow the idle of the engine.
No heat could be caused by:
- blocked heater core
- blocked heater hose
- thermostat stuck open (in which case the entire motor would be slow to warm up)
- bypassed heater core (hoses looped back to the motor)
Good luck and let us know what we can do to help!

RE: Rough idle on 66 coupe
One more question. Should be easy for you guys.
On the heater switches on the dash should the first lever (on the left) be up or down to turn the heat on?
My searches have revealed that the second lever should be all the way down for hot and the third lever is floor/dash heat on top and defrost on bottom. Is this correct?
This is sortof unrelated but didn't want to start a new thread and be the pestering newbie.

oh..and btw..after owning my 65 for 9 years now, I still haven't figured out the heater.....[&:]
I usually push the first two down till it gets hot inside....
