460
I'm currently building the 460 out of the Engine Masters Fall 2007 Volume 10 No.3 and the list of items to purchase has the oil pan for a fox body...but from my understanding if i place this motor in a fox body then i won't be able to smog it because of the year difference between motor and car....but i would like to place it in a classic...but i'm not sure what year it will fit in with out altering the shock towers...i was told only the 69-70 but i read some where that someone put a 460 in a 66..please advise...thanks for taking the time to read this...

RE: 460
I have a 429 cobrajet in my 69 Mach1 and it fits without altering the shock towers. You can get engine swap motor mounts from Crites and I have shorty headers from Fordpowertrain.com it's a tight fit but it works well. You have to modify the transmission mount slightly because the engine is about an inch farther forward for proper fit. I have a stock oil pan that clears my rack and pinion setup with no problems. Depending on your choice of intake manifold you will have to get a hood scoop for clearance.

RE: 460
You will tear a 66 apart if you did get it in to begin with.
I had to straighten mine of from a 350 hp 289 twisting and flexing things.
A lot of work ahead in torque boxing and frame connectors I even added a roll bar to help out.
the mustang 2 setup is what I have in mine with a 347 plenty of room for a FE motor.
Unless you just want a Mustang a 65-67 Fairlanes are BADAZZ with that set up also!
I would go Fairlane over a 66 stang for that. IMHO.

RE: 460
'71-'73 were the only chassis specifically designed to hold the 385 series big block. They'll fit in the '69-'70, but you may have clearance issues (build tolerances weren't exactly tight back then, so some will fit fine, others won't). '67-'68 will fit with some minor mods. '65-'66 will fit after you remove the shock towers.
For any of these chassis, you'll want a front sump oil pump/pan.

Hey, it's not my car but my brother has a 1968 Mustang Fastback with a 460/C6 combo in it.
I know he had to notch the top of the shock tower and install an aftermarket radiator with electric fan in front. The 460 fit between the towers OK but notching the top of the shock tower makes it easier to service the engine.
It is also longer than anything available in '68 so the aftermarket aluminum radiator and fan.
He also had to use a fiberglass hood with scoop to make clearance for the carburetor.
Wish I had a picture but sorry.

RE: 460
67-70 it fits better then the fe did still kinda tight to change the spark plugs now the 71-73 it fits perfect.Tarafield1 has a 429 in his 68 coupe youll need different motor mounts and headers rest isnt hard.Hood clearance might be a problem if you have a tall intake.
