Home Made Axle Seal Puller
Hello all,
I have the rear axle out from under the car, the axle shafts pulled, and all of the gunk cleaned off. However, I still needed to pull the axle shaft seals but did not the right tool for the job. Sooo... off to the hardware store for some parts.
After spending $4.50 I have what I think should do the job.
1. ea 1/2"x12" all thread
1. ea small steel plate with 5/8" hole
1. ea bigger steel plate with 5/8" hole
2. ea 1/2" flat washers
2. ea 1/2" nuts
Procedure:
1. Cut down small steel plate so that plate can fit through the seal in the axle yet still be big enough to provide enough surface area to pull the seal.
2. weld 1/2" nut to back of cut down small plate.
3. Screw 1/2" all thread into welded nut till flush with nut back off all thread a little and then weld all thread to nut.
4. Insert all thread with welded plate into axle housing through axle seal hole.
5. Put the big plate over the all thread, add the two washers and then the nut.
6. Tighten the nut down and pull the seal.
I hope this helps someone else out. It was a nice easy project for a cold rainy day.

RE: Home Made Axle Seal Puller
You can't replace the axle seal without pulling the axle. Why spend money on an axle seal puller? Use the axle itself to pull the seal. I have a seal puller but I never use it on axle seal. When you pull the axle put the end of the axle just behind the seal and use the axle to pop the seal out. Works every time.
