fly wheel 289-302
Will my fly wheel off my automatic 289 match up to a 302 engine(the 302 came out of a manual mustang). Also will I have to change the oil pans? I am putting the 302 in replace of the 289 engine in my 65 a code mustang

i believe your 289 flywheel is the 28oz whereas the later model 302 use a 50 oz flywheel, it may physically bolt up but it will cause major damage throwing the motor out of balance. if the 302 oil pan is of the double hump design then it will not fit your early mustang, youll need a front sump pan.

1985 and after 50 oz...
Anyone know if the balance difference applies to the harmonic balancer as well? On Chevrolet it has been my understanding that for an external balance engine, an imbalance harmonic balancer is required as well as an imbalance flywheel. My reading of my Ford Interchange book leads me to think that this does not apply to the SBF, but without actually saying so...

yeah balancer and flywheel are both different, and you'll have to swap your 289 oilpan onto the 302 (which will swap no problem). where is your dipstick on the 289? what about on the 302? if your sticking with carb you may have to swap the timing covers too so your fuel pump will bolt on and your dipstick too if it goes into the cover.
also, make sure you take the pilot bearing out of the back of the crack (right in the center) because the hub on the torque converter will not slide into the back of the crank with that bearing in there.
why are you doing the dreaded 289 / 5.0 swap?

it seems that the 5liter ho balancer is different from the other sbf dampers, im guessing it all boils down to the flywheel weight, 28oz flywheel means 28oz damper, i could be wrong but its worth checking into when you could lose a motor due to an imbalance problem.

A flywheel is for Manual transmission vehicles, and a flexplate is for an automatic... usually people call both of them the same thing (flywheel) but just be careful when you go to buy parts so that you use the proper name.
