Motor-Tranny install; advice needed!
I have all the pieces in place to install the motor and tranny tomorrow. The toploader is detached from the engine...and I have to go "solo" installing them tomorrow. My buddy who is experienced won't be around tomorrow, but I thinnk I can pull it off with the help of my son..I need all the advice I can get...beginning with bolting the tranny up and all the alignment tricks for the shaft, how to set the car up to drop in the motor and tranny as one unit, etc. Thanks....

Bolting it in place is fairly easy but getting the clutch and everything lined up correctly is probably something you should wait on your friend for if you have never done it before, especially if you do not have a book![sm=signs003.gif]

Put the tranny in first, supported by a jack, with the car up on jackstands. Install the clutch to the flywheel, and drop the engine in. I do it with the bellhousing already on the trans. The key is that once it's in place, put the trans in gear and you might have to crawl under and rotate the driveshaft(which should be installed before the engine) to get the splines to line up. If you're using a new bellhousing that you've never used before, checking it for alignment wouldn't hurt.

I have all the typical exploded view books, I remember some of what took place 14 months ago when we worked on the engine/tranny last. I have a good mechanical aptitude, so I was just looking to get some pointers.....

I'm sure you plan to use a engine lift. To me its easier to have the tranny bolted to the engine and drop it in as a unit. One thing that helps a lot is an adjustable hook that can change the center of gravity point, this allows you to tilt the engine as it goes in. Its not too big a deal as I normally do it alone. Just a lot of going back and forth. Take your time and check often.

I would leave them off, then test fit them after you get the engine in (you may have to move the engine a little to get them to fit), they can be easily damaged or bent. Be sure to check to see if any of the linkage hits them. They can vary somewhat between the manufactors.
