Default 302 or 289?

I was told that this is a 302, but I think it may be a 289, is there any way to tell from a visual inspection? If you can tell from this pictureplease let me know if it's a 302 or 289.

Also could someone enlighten me to what those redhoses are?

I can't see the picture at work, but a 302 will have "302" on the side of the block.

HTH!

Thanks. Actually I don't have access to the car right now, I may in a week or so. Are the 302 and 289 the same block?

almost the same block. 302 has a longer stroke I do believe. Parts will fit both engines, and if you want to stroke it you can do the same things. what year is the car? Just look behind the starter for the engine blocks #s and get back with us.

The blocks themselves are the same, the internals (crank, rods, and pistons) are slightly different. Casting numbers will give a good indication, but depending on the year you might get a 289 with a 302 casting number on the block.

They are almost the same, but the 302 block has slightly longer cylinder skirts.

Popular myth, actually. I've talked to a couple people who went as far as mic'ing several 302 and 289 blocks; same bore depth.
