Default New 9" rear end for my 66 fastback?

I just want to get your opinion on what to do as far as replacing my stock rear end with a 9". I am debating on trying to piece together a rear end, or just buy a complete setup. I would rather buy a complete setup, but i know that will be very pricey. Do you know of any place that will build the rear end that i want? I am thinking of a 3.55:1 gear. I want the car to be able to take off decent, but also able to run 65 mph without running 5000 rpms. Do you recommend a posi rear end? I heard that the handling is much worse with the posi rear. thanks for the advice!

handling with posi is not worse. handling with a spool is different, there alot of different ways to go, but if its going to be driven on the street, stay away from a spool

Tyler, why do you think you need a 9" rear end? What are you doing to the rest of the car?

last year i had the engine and transmission rebuilt. The engine now has around 325-350 horse, and I thought that the 9" would be the best option since everything in the rear end is still the original. So i thought that if i would have to replace the gears, i might as well just do it all at once. What do you think? should i stay with the stock rear, and just change the gears?

I'm in the middle of doing something a little different than my normal process. I am putting together a budget built 9 inch for my 67. I've already sourced the housing in 65/6 width for under $200 and I have located a 31 spline 3.5 trak lok for $300. Last up is axles...and I am hoping to have a new narrower rear to roll under my 67 in the spring to liven up the acceleration a little bit and then also run some custom rims with a larger than normal dish to them

I will point out though that I don't need a 9 inch and will give up some ponies by doing it. I chose it for my 67 because it was the fastest/easiest way to get the narrower rear I wanted and would offer a decent foundation if I do decide to start going high power with the car. If you aren't running a high HP setup you absolutely do not need the 9 inch I believe it will end up costing you the same for an 8 inch ring change as the cheapest 9 inch swap you can do.

I have a Currie 9" in my '65 fastback and have also had them in Jeeps. The Curries build nice axles. I think people are disappointed when they think they can get these axles at junk yard prices, only to find out that they are not cheap. I think James' question on need is a legit one. I have one because I at one time had a built 351W that put 394 ft-lb to the rear wheel and I needed to rebuild the entire axle anyway so it made sense at the time.

Good luck!
