decoding engine hp
i'm looking at a 1965 vert with a 289 in it but i can't figure out nadaguides.com hasoptions for the 289 in two different horse powers, i.e., the 225 and the 271. is there any way to tell by the vin or warranty number which you have?

check out:
http://www.mustangdecoder.com/decoder.html
(more info in FAQ). you'll be amazed.
If it's a K-code then it'll be _very_ expensive. they're very rare.

D codes were an engine option for the 1964 1/2 mustangs
taken from:
http://www.svs.com/zim/mustang/64engine.html
64.5 had unique engines:
5 Bolt V8's - 260 2V (F Code), 289 4V Low Compression (D Code) and 289 4V High Performance (K Code with Aluminum Water Pump),
6 cylinder - 170 (U Code).
In 65, the engines changed to:
6 Bolt V8's - 289 2V (C Code), 289 4V (A Code), and 289 High Performance (K Code with Cast Iron Water Pump),
6 Cylinder - 200 (T Code).
The D Code 289 Mustang engine with the Autolite 4 bbl carburetor is a rare engine. It was only offered as an option in 1964 1/2 Mustangs dated March - September of 1964. Some of the characteristics setting this rare engine apart from other early V8's include:
[ul][*]The air cleaner decal was black, white and red in color (rather than black and orange). It read "289 cubic inch 4-V premium fuel".[*]The timing chain cover had three variations: 1. an oil filler neck; 2. a hole for an oil filler neck with a plug in it; 3. no oil filler neck or oil filler hole.[*]All D Code engines used an aluminum water pump.[*]D Code 289's used an Autolite 4100 4V 1.08 Venturi carburetor.[*]D Code 289's had 5 bolt holes for attaching the bell housing (later engines had 6 bolts).[*]Early D Codes utilized a generator and later D Codes utilized an alternator.[/ul]

an A code vert would be a nice thing...if you post more details/ pics, there are guys here who can tell you if its good buying or not.
the fact that the car is an A code doesnt mean the engine is the original either. there are a lot of early 289 mustangs with 302s in them.

RE: decoding engine hp
thanks for all the information guys.
hopefully i've successfully uploaded three pictures, i suppose i'll find out in a minute. the engine looks original to me (knowing nothing about nothing), especially given the orange and black sticker on the air cleaner, although i suppose they could have slapped that onto any engine.
the guy wants 10k for the car, which is the most i want to spend, and he says the driver's side floor pan is getting soft, but should last for a while. he has not posted any pictures of any of the suspicious areas on these cars (underbody, rockers, quarters, etc). so i'm a little leery of what i'm going to find when/if i go look. but presumably if the floor is the only thing that needs work (understanding thatif the floor needs work, other areas probably have rust as well) the car may actually be worth close to 10k. nada says low retail is 15k. let me know what you guys think.
