Any Body Running New Ford Racing 342?
I'm planning on putting new motor in this summer and had it narroweddown to 2 choices:
Keith Craft or Smedding 347
But was looking at Ford Racing 342 and just got off the phone with the tech guys and they are estimating it at 375HP and 400lbs torque.
Torque about same as Keith Craft and Smedding - less HP (25 to 50hp).
I know with the Ford Racing I need to swap out water pump - but have a polishedWeind on current 302 - so not that big of deal. Will also need to swap out pan and put carb on but could put in Canton and still be $1500 cheaper than Keith Craft of Smedding.
Looking for a meaty weekend driver that I can take to strip - once in a great while.
What do you guys think?

I have the 302 GT-40 crate motor also. Perhaps you have the E-cam Scott, but the B-cam motor I have pulls a bit better on the upper end and I haven't noticed it falling off early. Either way, I think the Ford Racing crate motors are pretty good buys for an all-new product built by the same union labor that built our cars.
Good luck!

I prefer building my own engines. You save on labor and can put it into a better setup. Out of a 347, I'd be pissed if I didn't get 375 to the wheels....at least. Good 347's can generally run around 400rwhp. Crate engine warranties are nice, and they're affordable, but depending on what level of performance you want, you might be better off spending a bit more to get a bit more. If you're more concerned about how fast you go than having a warranty or how much you spend, then you'll be happier in the long run having an engine built. If you're more concerned about a warranty or saving a bit of money, then a crate engine is a better choice.
If it were me, 347 with light internals, AFR 185's, roller cam, RPM intake plus the other crap, should be good for 450hp. 375/400 is a bit low for a 347, but will still move pretty darn well on the street.

I'm looking to keep in 400/400 range. Beyond that I'm concerned about other components and streetability and everyday realiability. I do plan on putting an upgraded C4 in and already havea beefed up 8" (3.44 gears and traction lock) butif I start getting closer to 500 I would have do to additional upgrades.I don't really plan on running at strip - more of a show and go car.
I agree with 375/400 of the ford crate would have expected a little more - looks like they are using the cheaper ford heads on them. I started talking to local builder about putting together 347 with AFR and RPM intake as suggested. Warranty is important - local builder says 3 years which would be good. Need to do some background checks. Now just have to see what he's talking for costs and components. I will post once I get it for critique. thanks

Cheap, fast, reliable....pick 2. The lower horsepower crate engines don't have much horsepower(relative to more advanced builds of a similar engine) because they're designed to keep cost down and be reliable, so power is sacraficed, the reliable and powerful crate engines are not cheap.

Fords stuff is nice. But what nobody seems to know the warranty in depth. You MUST use the intake they recomend, and intake gasket. Then have it proffesionally tuned and have proof. If you have done it, but not the right 1250 "R" gasket, they will not warranty it.
