Default Shifting problems

1965 mustang 289 ford 4-speed

The problems occours after shifting into reverse, it refuses to shift out of reverse and go into any other gear and takes a very long time to get out but once you finally get it out it will shift through all gears with no problem. any insight would be greatly appreciated

Sounds like it could be a linkage adjustment issue. Do you have a shop manual (not a chilton's/hayne's)?

is it the original shifter?
does yours have the reverse lock out?
is the spring kit that puts it between 3 and 4 when you let go the stick in neutral still working?

+1 Starfurry, My factory 4 speed shifter was so worn out had same problems.
Mine was the shifter not just the bushings. A hurst Competition plus fixed my problems.
Was a pain to get it adjusted but once it that was the last I ever had to touch it.

Will it shift out (easily) if you shut the engine off? If not - =! for the linkage/alignment.

If so - it is internal. sorry.

Sorry for the hi-jack. Cmanf, did you have a problem getting the hurst to fit? Did you have to trim the sheetmetal and how much if so? I have heard they do not fit without modifying the tunnel opening.

Yea the shifter fits nicely to the trans but I did have to cut about a half inch out in the front of the existing hole.
Wasnt a big deal my car is as far away from original as can be anyway.
BTW my TKO needs about another quarter more rubbing the shifter housing now.
The hurst boot covers it nicely. Im reusing the boot on my tko looks cool with the big H on it.

Thx...that is exactly what I needed to know. About a Saturday project with a sawzall/dremel sounds like. I have a hurst handle and grip, but don't think the shifter is hurst. It is getting sloppy so I am moving that way.

I think on the fast back im just going to cut the factory hole out and move it forward. Then fill in the gap.
It has that stamped edge. Id like to keep that car some what non butchered like my 66 is.
