Default overheating 347 but everything is new???

I am stuck....

I have a 65 mustang with a new 347 (440hp), new water pump, new aluminum radiator, flexlite fan, no shroud, timing is high but it runs well, 180 thermostat, C4 tranny going into itand it OVERHEATS in traffic or idling.... Can go 3000 rpm on highway and it is fine. Ireally don't want to put a lot of money in trying different things. The lower hose iscorrect with aspring, bled air out of it. What do you think? Isit justthe shroud?

maybe something is plugging the coolant lines? i would put a shroud on and see if that fixes it

Are you sure the fan is working? It comes on when idling?

You need a shroud. The Flex-a-lites are designed to work with a shroud, without it a lot of the air they pull is just turbulence from around the side of the radiator, rather than through it.

I dont know if it would help in your case but since i live where it never gets below freezing, i keep a higher ratio of water to coolant and that helps keep me cool. As I understand it, the water transfers the heat out better than the coolant.

You could also make sure that your thermostat is not facing the wrong direction...

I dont have a shroud on my fan and have been told that the improvements in cooling with a shroud are minimal.
Good luck with this and enjoy that stroker. Sounds like you have a great setup!!

But when its hot out, and i get stuck in stop n go for awhile, mine will get hot too.

If I am not exactly accurate or anyone would care to elaborate on this, please feel free.

The shroud is to direct the air through the radiator when the car is moving slowly/stopped.

If the thermostat were in backwards I imagine he would still overheat at highway speeds.

It could be a lot of things you sure your temp gauge is working right is the thermostat in there right.

The shrouds will increase the airflow thru the radiator maybe as much as 40 to 50%. Without one the air circumvents around in circles at the tip of the blades and is not pulled thru the radiator. The tips of the blades are the most effective part of the fan when it comes to moving air. I would install a properly size shroud with as little fan tip clearence as possiable. In the past I have moved the radiator back closer to the fan with good results on my track car. Also the proper coolent/water ratio is essiential (don't over do the coolent) with the addition of some "Water Wetter" is good for a few degrees. Some times changing the fan blade helps also.

Great information, the fan is about 1.75 inches from the radiator, belt driven fan, thermostat is in correctly, don't know if the gauge is working correctly (it was when I pulled the old motor out - never over heated) but it boils over so regardless it is getting too hot. I was thinking about a factory shroud ($100) but then what about going to an electric fan with a shroud?
I bought the motor new - how would I know if I need a fan to turn the opposite direction? Maybe they put on a water pump that is reverse direction or am I stretching it?

Remember I was trying to avoid all the money with trail and error.... Thanks everyone.
