Default I need carb and cam suggestions for a stock 65 289

I would like as much low and mid torque as I can get with stock short block, and heads.

The heads are not at the shop yet so I would be open to modifing them via larger valves or exhaust porting if it would make a significant difference.

What would make a good cam and carb combo to go with stock or slightly modified64 289 heads for max low and mid range torque?

off the top of my head, id say a edelbrock performer cam, intake and carb. if your gonna step up valve size you may be able to use a little more cam, but the factory ford heads really dont flow well to be able to use more cam. the performer set-up will give you plenty of vacumn and a nice idle, but definately wake the motor up. by the way dont forget about the gears. going from a lame 2:79 up to maybe a 3:55 will really wake it up and maybe cruise around 3000 rpms, not too bad for a 289 they like to rev! theres a lot of options out there. and im sure youll get some good input from the guys here.

heh with 3.55 you won't be pulling 3000 rpm in a 3 speed auto @ 60-65. i pull 3000 or so with a 3.08 @ those speeds lol, and i'm ditching the 3.08 for a 3.73 poor gearing hurts these little 289s

65mph with my 3.00's is 2,600rpm. Tire size plays a role as well.

starfury recommended the comp cams xe250 for a stock like idle or a 256 for a little more aggressive idle.

both work well with stock heads, pushrods, and springs

i've got the 4.11 rear end in mine,...............it'll hurt you on top end, and mileage sucks, i've got a 650 holly, and a very beefy cam,........very torkey, but it sounds really good. it'll ****-n-git...................... i ran some guy in a souped up new pontiac something,..........and my ancient mustang got him in the first two gears.............(4 speed manual), hung right in front of him in 3rd, and had to shut er down before 4th,..............was just going a couple of blocks. the old mustangs crow hop sometimes............i had ladder bars on mine, but a friend/mechanic too em off, i liked it a lot better with those on there.............no hop at all with those, made a big difference. mine doesnt hop now, but my old one did really bad.

NOW IF YOU ALL HAD OVERDRIVE like me then cruise r's are of no concern 2100@ 65mph with 3.50 gears with a t-5..but a performer cam of .448/.472 lift will do okay
