Default heads / cam combo

so im looking into buying someheads for the 5.0, but i figure i may as well get a new cam since i only have the stock little one. but i dont know what kinda cam i should get (due to my lack of mechanical knowledge). so i was wondering what you guys think would be good. im shooting for about a 400hp goal. i also plan to turbo it but that is a ways down the road. the rest of the car is ready and its time for some $$ motor work. just a couple opinions would help me out

Heads and Cam alone won't get you to your goal. What parts are in the short block? One thing to keep in mind is your cam choice now may not work with the turbo plans in the future. If you are going the turbo route, build the engine for a turbo. ( compression ratio, cam and head choice) 400 HP now vs 400 with turbo are to different setups.

well i would be hoping to hit 400 with the turbo, so i would build it for that.

the block is a stock 5.0. the only thing is that its carbed. right now its at 9.5:1 compression. so should i just gut it and go new forged rotating assembly? im kinda trying to stay away from stroking it since its my DD

If the engine is running driving now, I would just either get me a set of cheap E7 heads,GT40 or GT40P heads, do some mild port work and choose a cam like a Trick Flow stage 1 or Comp Cam withsimilar specs. Upgrade the valve springs to match the cam. You could use a smaller cam and just add 1.7 rockers to add some lift to the cam also. (GT40P heads use special headers) Your cam choice with be dictated by the intake you have. Just get a Cam to fit the RPM range for the intake. Then I would build me a Turbo Engine over time. Forged parts are better, but I have seen guys running 400 plus with Hyper pistons. I guess it depends on how hard you are going to run it and how long you want it to last.

sounds good, the intake would be rpm air gap. and what kind of headers do the gt 40ps use? right now i have tri y;s but i was thinking about getin some equal lenth headers. and i dont think i would run the car too hard, its my DD but i would be going to the track maybe once or twice a month. thanks for the advice, helps me out alot
