Default Smog equipment???

Hello all,
I'm new to the forum and have a question that I could use your insight on. A classsic car buff looked under the hood of my 67 Mustang (289) and told me that I have smog equipment and it wasn't necessary to have that in there. Is that true? It was a few hoses and a motor that was above the alt. Please help.

If you're not worried about being "all original" then take that crap off. Don't throw it away though because I understand that smog equipment is rare and valuable to people doing resto's of their cars. I guess most people took that junk off and threw it away when they were new too...

That may be a California special. Take it by the inspection place and ask them if it is necessary.

Umm... If you're referring to a safety inspection, unfortunately cali doesn't have those. For emissions/smog, there is no requirement for a vehicle older than 1973 (may have been moved up) so you can do prettymuch whatever you want to the car without big brother getting in your face.

Thanks Governator for keeping things this way!

In California, all 1966 and newer vehicles still must retain their original smog equipment. There are just no smog test or inspections on vehicles 1975 and older required. If a CHP or local cop feels like it, they can do a spot check and cite you, if your missing any required smog equipment. Granted this is unlikely to happen, unless your caught at a street race, or photographed by an exhaust sniffing unit along side a freeway on ramp, and then you can be sent to an inspection station to be checked. Keep the smog pump, they don't hurt the engine anyway.

Hmmmm. We are getting mixed information here. Can other Kali folks chime in to clear this up?

Wow, I've never heard of either of those happening, but I guess anything's possible, even though remotely so... I guess, keep that dead weight on then, though you're probably screwed anyway since the 30+ year old stuff probably doesn't work. Simple solution to your problem is to do whatever you want and don't stop for cops, and take the plates off your car

If you do remove any smog equipment, just hold on to it. So you can put it back on if needed.
