That is not a VIN code, it is a casting number. That is a basic 65 - 289 block.
VIN's would be stamped. But not in 65.
Look near that casting number and you will find the date code. It will be like '5B14', That would be Feb 14, 1965. That is the date the block was actually cast at the foundry.

I was wondering if anyone could give me ideas on what some good mods would be to beef the small block up a bit. Im gonna put it in my mustang as a daily driver when it gets done.

I suggest an alum. intake, 4bbl carb, alum heads, headers, and an electronic ignition.

A good cam to match your driving characteristics and converting over to a roller valve train is always a nice idea. As far as beefing up...think main girdle and valve stud girdles. I have not found much positive info on valley supports yet.

I'm having trouble figuring out if i have a 2 speed transmission or 3 speed transmission. Some people say ford didn't make a 2 speed and others too can someone help me? I think it is a 2 speed or something is wrong with it cause it only shifts once in drive.

dterry, as I seem to recall from some other threads with that exact same concern, D on early Mustang automatics actually starts the car in 2nd gear. I believe the detent before D starts it in first, but I'm not sure about which it is. I don't have one myself, and haven't seen it in person, but there's a way to get it to engage all 3.
