Exhaust Tone - 289
I plan on converting the stock single exhaust to dual exhaust on my 68 289 2 barrell sometime in the next couple of months. I plan to get a local custom exhaust shop to do it. No headers, no engine mods, everything is stock. Would like to get just a little rumble so you know its a V8. Anyone have any advice on muffler choice? I'm running exhaust out the back and plan to change rear valance with the cutouts and put on the dual tips.
Thanks,
Craig

as far as mufflers go check on "flowmaster 40s" (very loud). Maganaflows (deeper, more mellow and not as screamy as the flowmasters). they are typical choices. Check on the FAQ, i remember we once had a few recordings

I've had glasspacks and flowmaster and they both 'droned' at over 2200 RPM. Couldn't hear the radio.
Bought some new mufflers for a 07 mustang GT, from a guy on craigslist for 30 bucks/pair. Sound good but not too loud..

you can go on youtube.com and type in "68 mustang exhaust" and it will pull up clips of cars so you hear what they sound like. Some will tell you what muffler they are running. You cant go wrong with flowmaster 40 series or a magnaflow.

I don't know, I don't think Flowmaster 40's are very 'right' :P They're absurdly loud and blatty for my tastes. I prefer Dynomax or Magnaflow. I have Flowmater Hushpower II's on my car and I love them, but they're more than most people are willing to spend on mufflers alone.
When you get the exhaust installed, get 2-1/4" pipe and make sure the shop installs an H-pipe. It will help balance the exhaust pulses from the two cylinder banks, providing a more even exhaust note and a smoother running engine.

will put in a h-pipe somewhen down the road for that. this should as well help bring a bit more 'base' into the whole sound.
I absolutely love my flowmaster 40s, but yes, it's not everymans taste
That's a recording from a good while back, ignore the high pitch rattle, this was the handbrake lever touching the exhaust, have that fixed
