Default Switching Distributors from early to newer

Below is a link to a distributor at autozone I want to get for an 86 engine. However, I want to use a carb 4V and a 65 intake manifold.

http://www.autozone.com/N,16400030/s...eResultSet.htm
------------------------------------
Product Part No. Price

Cardone Reman / Distributor
Warranty - LLT 30-2894MA Price: $94.99
Core: $60.00
Total: $154.99

Application:
With cast iron gear
Note:
Supplied with module
Cast iron and steel gears are not interchangeable and will cause severe damage.

Store: Online:
Cardone Reman / Distributor
Warranty - LLT 30-2830MA Price: $94.99
Core: $35.00
Total: $129.99

Application:
With steel gear
Note:
Supplied with module
Cast iron and steel gears are not interchangeable and will cause severe damage.
-------------------------------

The engine has a roller cam in it, so I know I need to get a steel gear distributor.

However, in the picture I have, Can I just take a joiner to the dual distributor and plug it back into the carbeurator, since there will be no emission stuff on this engine setup.

thanks guys

money. I just bought this 68 distributor from autozone. They have a lifetime warranty on the product. I want to swap it back for a steel gear one like above. Just in case that one blows out on my I can take it back

Just buy a steel gear and change it. Alot easier then wiring in the later distributor.

I thought roller cams used a bronze (softer) distributor gear?

Are you worrying about the vacuum advance on the distributor? If so, just hook it up to a timed vacuum port (usually above the base plate).

Bronze, while harder than cast iron, will still get chewed up by a steel cam gear.

Just get yourself a new gear and change it. It's not all that hard.

Sounds like I am getting a new gear! I guess later I can get rid of the points some way.
but doesn't the 86 distributor from autozone, it has no points? I guess I can still hook it to the coil and be done with it...

ok... lol just get the gear!

the 1986 should be electronic (no points). if you want to swap dist. just change the gear- it should be held in by a roll pin.
